Performance

Performing is akin to a shamanic journey. You travel to the spirit world, connect with emotions and beings. And pass that thread to the people around you.

 

My performance experience developed over many years of dancing with fire. I worship fire as the primal force connecting us with the sacred realm. Fire can't be controlled but it can be cultivated. It's the ultimate Teacher.

 

After experiencing several household fires, I was literally forced to work with it in order to understand and appease it. It has been a process of learning from that element, who to me is living being. Fire dancing is a trance-inducing, consciousness-purifying, and healing experience.

As a solo mother, performing has been a rare treat because of time and financial constraints. I am all the more inspired to use my future performances as a platform to advocate for solo mothers, who are often too busy or stressed to lobby for themselves and are, as a result, oft overlooked in debates and policy.

​

Over the past decade I have focused on performing my poetry live. I am in the process of developing a body-positive ritual performance integrating poetry with my ancestral and lived experience.
